Introduction

Smiling Kekchi Children from CaclaibGod is at work in Guatemala. For years, statistics have shown that this country has a higher percentage of evangelical Christians than most Latin American countries. In recent years, church leaders and missionaries have felt that the numbers are inflated. Other studies indicate that the country’s population is one of the youngest in all of Latin America. Due to the Joshua project, a statistical census compiled by Christians all over the world, in 2003 a more accurate account of Christianity in Guatemala was given. In 2001, they recorded that 25.4% of Guatemalans profess to be evangelical Christians. The current climate of receptivity to the Gospel highlights an opportunity for harvest among the population to transform the coming generation of Guatemalan people.

Steve Rice worked in Guatemala for three years in mountain ministries around the Zacapa area.  Presently, he and his family are living and working in Alta Verapaz.  God has given them a vision for ministry in and around Coban, in the state of Alta Verapaz. This area, reportedly consists of more than 492,000 people of an indigenous heritage from Mayan decent called Kekchi. The Joshua Project reports that only 17.5% of these people, who reside mainly in the villages of Alta Verapaz, are Christian.
