Help Wanted: Skate Ramp Project

By Steven Rice, Jr.

June 5, 2008  - We are making plans for a short-term mission trip for this fall. The main purpose for the trip will be to build portable extreme sports apparatus that will be used for evangelism. Our first project will be to build portable skateboarding ramps. We are also planning to build a portable rock climbing wall if time permits and we have enough people.

This type of evangelism is popular in the USA and is now spreading to some foreign countries. I will be attending a Christian skate conference in CA on September 1st of this year. It will give me an opportunity to learn more about this evangelism tool and be able to use it effectively here in Guatemala.

We are also asking God to supply us with a box truck that will be converted into a portable stage that can be opened from the side. It will be a great tool that we can use for open air services, small concerts and other outreaches in large cities all over Guatemala. The inside of the box truck will be used to store the portable sports equipment and ministry supplies.

We plan to have a two and a half day event each place that we go. On Friday, the day that we arrive, we will get everything set up and then show a Spanish evangelistic style skate video that night. Saturday and Sunday will be for testimonies, Christian Rock concerts, free skate time and competitions...etc. In addition, the portable rock climbing wall will be set up to have speed and technique competitions.

Our plan is to join together with churches in the area of each event. We will ask for their help with advertisement, follow-up and discipleship with new converts and some financial assistance to help with the expenses. Recently, we became acquainted with pastors and leaders from different churches all over Guatemala. Our plan is to join with some of these leaders and get to know others that will be interested in having this type of outreach in their area.

Once the first set (quarter pipe, launch pad & steps w/rail) of skateboarding ramps has been completed, we will begin our outreach using the equipment in our local area of Coban. We are not planning to wait to use the new equipment until this entire project is completed. We realize that it will take time to get everything in place to get on the road.

With the present economic difficulties and the rising prices for gas and food, we could be tempted to put these projects on hold and wait for a better time. We would if we thought that was what God would have us to do. We are convinced that God is testing our faith. Recently, on three different occasions, God confirmed His desire by telling us that now is the time to "throw out the net".

For this project to become a reality we will need, financial sponsors, more staff (interns) and tons of prayer. Please pray about how God would have you to help us "throw out the net" in Guatemala.

If you or someone you know is interested in helping with this project or if you would like to learn more please contact us via email or by phone. The dates for this trip will be announced later. We will decide according to the availability of the people that contact us first.
