An Awesome Ministry Tool in Central America!!
|
The Project |
|
We are in the process of
launching a new project here in Guatemala. We are
building an extreme sports team to travel to large
cities all over the country We will be
using skateboarding, bmx bikes, zip-line jumping, wall
climbing and enduro motorcycle riding to help build
relationships with young adults that normally wouldn't
take us seriously. |

 |
|
We started announcing this project
in the Spring of 2008 here in Guatemala. We are hoping to have
our first set of portable skate ramps built by the end of 2008. They
will immediately be used locally in Coban to give the skaters a
place to practice. Then after we have more pieces in place, we
will begin travelling and holding weekend events in different
Guatemalan cities. This has caused so
much excitement that we already have an open invitation in
several cities and even to the country of Costa Rica. |
|
Our Target
Often, we have first time visitors here in Guatemala and they
are stunned by the beautiful landscapes and intrigued by the
cultural differences. One of the questions most frequently asked
is, "Why are they just sitting around and hanging out on the
streets?" The answer is, "They're bored or they |
 |
|
have nothing better to do". This is
due to the lack of employment opportunities and a cultural view
that a college education doesn't necessarily get you a better job.
So what you get is a large amount of them (especially guys) just
hanging around to see what happens. Steven Rice, Jr., the
founder of In His Steps International Missions, believes that
extreme sports will give the ministry a common bond with this
generation and open up opportunities to be mentors. We will
teach basic values and also lead them to
make decisions to follow Jesus. |
